Hillcrest’s Historic Roots and Modern Recognition
In 1906, our neighborhood was known as “University Heights,” part of San Diego’s uptown area. William Wesley Whitson’s purchase of land and subsequent development established Hillcrest as a thriving community. Today, the neighborhood continues to grow and evolve, with the American Planning Association designating Hillcrest as one of the top ten Great US Neighborhoods for 2007. This recognition underscores Hillcrest’s unique blend of history, diversity, and modern vitality.
